So if Google is crawling CSS, I'm wondering what we need to start being more weary of in terms of image replacement.

There are a ton of techniques, most of which involve display: none or text-indent: -(enter really large number).

Pierre, aka eKstreme here :)
After posting, several people discussed what Google could potentially be doing with the CSS files. As many have rightly pointed out, it's hard to figure out algorithmically if the CSS is hiding text and so could be used as a potential spam flag.
One decent theory is that Google could be using the CSS to create thumbnails, along the lines of Snap. For that, they would obviously need the CSS files.
As for confirmation, I've had one person email me with an excerpt from his log files and I've seen a blog post in Russian that Google's translation service seems to suggest is another request from a Googlebot for a CSS file. I'm going to round those up with a follow-up post.
By the way, the original post with updates is at my blog.
Cheers,
Pierre

the real question is how is a machine going to determine if a display:none is a bad or not. They do some amazing stuff over at CSSZenGraden and use that tag quite a bit.

re: " I don't think most people found this particularly surprisingly since a lot of us already suspected Google of doing this and Google actually admitted... that they would be crawling CSS"

Anyone who DID find this surprising just hasn't been paying attention.
