Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this panel and offering opinion, it is appreciated for those who did not attend (like myself) and are interested in what is happening at the conferences.

I was reading through the different posts and think its worth noting that Stephan Spencer had gone back and offered more clarification and discussion to the issues at hand via comments on both blogs.

At the least, it shows how being responsible for your actions in the social media space is also important, if not more so, than perhaps some of the tactics involved.

If I may take your line of thought beyond social media and even beyond search marketing: what is marketing? Is it always natural? Why are people buying nike or prada? Most of the products/services out there are not worthwhile and do not get distributed/recommended/sold "naturally." And that's why these companies need marketing. Most products are not worth talking about and that's why you need marketers to convince people that they are.
Social media spamming is just another manifestation of that. If a company can't offer an interesting or exciting product or run a unique campaign, and most really can't differentiate themselves from the competition, what should it do?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not defending spamming of any kind but there are certain realities that we need to account for. It's hard to convince people that their social media widget for cat food lovers is not the most exciting thing since sliced bread.

Funny how Li and I both wrote about SM and put it under it a microscope. I hadn't seen what she wrote until today. I think it's a great that she, I and now you, Lisa, are asking challenging questions. I feel that SM is not satisfying for different reasons. Li points out even more, from a different angle and your impressions are right smack in the same pool.

We can do much with SM if it's not completely destroyed before we get the chance to do so.
