4 Ways Search Marketing is Like Super Bowl 44 (XLIV)

Super Bowl XLIV logo

Super Bowl XLIV kicks off in Miami this Sunday, and in the three hours that follow, cheers and jeers will explode across the country as America revels in its favorite pastime. Sure, noshing dip and screaming at a screen can be tiring, but the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints have their work cut out for them as they battle for the NFL Championship.

It got me to thinking that the journey to the Super Bowl is a lot like search marketing. So, in honor of Super Bowl XLIV (44), here are four ways the Super Bowl is like search marketing.

Getting Cozy with Self Promotion – SEM Synergy Extras

colorful margarita drinks

On today’s episode of SEM Synergy, guest Lisa Barone joined us on the show. If you read the BCI blog before September of ’08, you know The Lisa from these very pages. There’s also a chance you know her as the blogger kicking butt and chief branding officer of the marketing company she co-founded, Outspoken Media.

During what I’ll loosely call our interview (i.e. happy hour at Yolanda’s Mexican Restaurant), Lisa touches on the need for writers to overcome any lingering aversion to self promotion. Because, as she explains, promotion is the difference between awesome content and awesome content that people read. It’s a topic she tackles is greater detail on the Outspoken Media blog, where she writes:

“Content is not king. Your ability to promote that content is.”

SEO Weekend Update: Local, Mobile and Maps

Bing Maps Local Events feature

I’m a day late in climbing out from under the ever-piling heap called my feed reader — but hey, if Punxsutawney Phil can claw his way to the surface today, I can too. Here’s the search news from over the weekend through today, with a special focus on local and mobile news.

Local Events Added to Bing Maps

The Local Events application in Bing now features event listings. From Bing Maps, go to the Map Apps (if you don’t already have Silverlight installed you’ll be prompted to download it) and select Local Events. From there the local events will populate on the map as well as the navigation pane to the left. From here you can sort events by date and category. Currently, the calendar and event site Zvents is feeding the event listings to Bing, and more listing partners may be in store for the future.

Relevance: Good for SEO, Good for YOU

broken clock in lots of pieces

Growing up, I always thought of my dad as Mr. Tech, spending a Saturday afternoon fiddling to fix the vacuum cleaner or hooking up new gear for the family sound system.

I’d later hear stories of him attending a technical institute to learn the inner workings of the VCR. The punch line of the story is that he spent the last $400 in the newlyweds’ bank account to register for the class, pulled apart the pieces of their VCR like some eager clockmaker, and then artfully put the pieces of the VCR back together… as a trash pile.

Twenty years later and I’m his go-to girl for anything done on a computer or online. My e-mail address is his e-mail address. While on trips he asks me to look up locations with the help of my magic square (read: iPhone). And more than once he’s asked me to buy his concert tickets online because Ticketmaster has forsaken him and his brick-and-mortar brood.

He was the first guy on the block to get a laser disk player and he’ll be the last guy on earth to sign up for Netflix. How is it that a once technically adventurous man became such a technophobe?
