Friday Recap: Caution! Alot of Nonsense Ahead

funny pictures of cats with captions

It’s recap time again. Hold on to your white/gray/black hats and take a ride with me.

So first, I’ve gotta plug our Small Biz Discovery Contest because we’re giving away some fantastic prizes, including a pass to Search Engine Strategies San Francisco. To play, write an article that speaks to the community of small business owners, giving them one powerful tactic for SEO, PPC or SMM that would improve their online presence. Read all the deets in yesterday’s blog post.

You also may have noticed that this week Bruce Clay, Inc.’s newest writer made her debut on the blog. Jessica Lee reminded us of the marketing benefits of getting cozy with our communities offline. There’s nothing like that in-personal touch. (Yeah, I just made up that phrase. Nice, right?)

From Web Developer to SEO consultant

web design to seo

So it all began 5 weeks ago. I was a web developer for 10 years and now suddenly find myself, an SEO consultant at Bruce Clay. I remember before I started, telling a former colleague in web development about my new role in SEO. “Hey, guess who scored a new job in search engine optimisation!” [...]

SEM Synergy Extras — Follow Us on Facebook

Confession time: I have 66 pending friend requests on Facebook. They range from my cousin’s wife to coworkers and industry colleagues to girls I went to high school with. I add new friends like they’re getting into the VIP room or something, grudgingly and mostly just so I can judge them later. I’ll admit it, I don’t get the coffee klatch nature of Facebook and it’s not one of my Must-Visit sites. (Buzz is though. Now you all can judge me in return.)

But even though I don’t get Facebook and I rarely sign on except to untag pictures of me, it doesn’t mean I don’t have some activity. In fact in the last couple weeks I’ve created fan pages, responded to events, and become a fan of (or maybe just liked? Is that what the kids are doing now?) a couple brands. Just before I sat down to write this entry, I went to grab lunch at our local bagel place, John’s Bagel Deli. While I was there, I noticed in the corner of one of their whiteboard menus that someone had scribbled, “We’re on Facebook. John’s Bagel Deli”.

About-Face

With the progression of technology, it’s becoming easier and easier to depart from face-to-face communication. And although the Internet has allowed businesses to touch a wider audience than ever before, the human aspect of interaction outside of the cyber world is still very powerful.

This month, I joined the talented team at Bruce Clay as its newbie writer. I’ve been fortunate in my career to not only have a background in writing for print and online media but to also have experience in public relations and marketing. It’s given me added perspective on how to approach relationships in the business world. And while I’m an advocate for social media and of course, a holistic SEO plan, I also understand the power of communication sans technology.

another standing cat

Looking at my collection of links for the week, that post title just kinda came to me. Sounds like fun in store, no? Okay, so the yeti. An Oriental Yeti, to be precise. The mysterious, hairless creature will be undergoing DNA testing to determine what breed of cat-bear-kangaroo it is. There is some concern in [...]
