April 8, 2010Take a Walk in Your Customers’ Shoes

Today I rolled around barefoot in the grass to take part in a clever marketing campaign.
The third-annual One Day Without Shoes is a challenge by shoe brand TOMS to go without shoes for a day. TOMS’ mission is to provide a pair of shoes to a child in a developing nation for every pair of shoes purchased by a customer. The point it hopes to make with this campaign is that most children in developing countries go without something as vital yet basic as shoes — a condition that can make them ineligible for school attendance or lead to a debilitating disease preventable with shoes and simple hygiene.

Automating Twitter with a Human Touch — SEM Synergy Extras

We all recognize the awesome potential of Twitter for business. But considering the amount of time I devote to cultivating my personal Twitter account, there’s a realization that some businesses won’t have the resources to put a full-time staff member on the job.
Last week I shared 5 Things You May Not be Leveraging for Twitter, which focused on developments in the platform and Twitter strategies that may be overlooked to a business’s detriment. One point made was that automation can be done right, to which I received a thoughtful request from Wynne Pirini of DrivingOnlineSales.com. He commented:
“It’s interesting that you suggest automating some things in twitter. I think there is some truth to this and it depends upon what you should automate. I want to hear more of your thoughts on this topic – ‘how to automate, without losing quality, and without spamming’. Something like that anyway.”
Your wish is my command!

How to Program a Podcast

Yesterday I siphoned off a little wisdom from podcast superstar Adam Carolla and shared some lessons from a podcast pioneer. After I published the post, Paula suggested that I might have some of my own pearls to share based on my experience of planning and programming a podcast for Bruce Clay, Inc. each week. I suppose I have experienced a thing or two in the last two years of podcasting…
Note: These points speak only to the content development side of the podcast, and not to the technical requirements. Luckily I’ve got our friends at WebmasterRadio.FM to worry about getting the podcast on iTunes and archiving a downloadable version to their site. They’re also the ones that stitch together the different segment recordings and add in the ads that help power the network.

Lessons from a Podcast Pioneer

Not only am I fan personally, but the work that comedian Adam Carolla has done to move the podcast genre forward earns my professional respect, as well. After CBS pulled the plug on his three-year-old radio show, Carolla tested the Internet waters to give his fanatical following the crudely comical mix of irreverent humor and observations of real-world irony they’d come to rely upon. Last year his podcast was named iTunes’ best audio podcast and racked up more than 50 million downloads. This year, Carolla has parlayed his daily show done in his garage into a burgeoning network of varied talent and topics.
Adam’s Ace Broadcasting Network is still in its early days and still experimenting with formats and show concepts, ad partners and integrations. But if the engaged fan base and impressive download figures have anything to do with it, the network will one-day-soon be a profit generator for Carolla and crew.
So what lessons can we learn from the first big star of the podcast world?

Friday Recap: Fools’ Paradise Edition

What a week! Yesterday was April Fools’ Day and as could be expected, pranks galore ensued. David Harry has rounded up Google’s annual joke-a-thon, including a name change on the home page, Google Translate for animals and the mysterious disappearance of vowels on the Gmail home page. The cruelest April Fools’ joke of all came courtesy of College Humor. Lying to New Yorkers that they’d be so lucky as to get In-N-Out. That’s just mean!

Social Media Content Examples that Work
I just wrapped up a brainstorm of link magnet content ideas and recommendations for a client. Along the way I found some interesting examples to point to, and I figured that’s the stuff I can share with everybody, so why not?
First let’s take a lesson from the king of viral content himself, Matthew “The Oatmeal” Inman. Matt and his work were featured on Last Call with Carson Daly last night and his lessons are gold.
