Friday Recap: Servers Are Drama Edition
As many of you noticed this week, our servers were irritable and decided to shut down the blog on numerous occasions. We were pleasantly surprised at how many people took the time to contact us and let us know. We had messages through Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, text and phone call. Susan joked that next would come smoke signals and then telegram:
“BLOG IS DOWN STOP GET IT TOGETHER STOP NO SERIOUSLY STOP THIS IS ANNOYING STOP”
So, in case you were equally as disappointed as us to get that cute little 404 message when you dropped by (BTW, you should have all the copies of the Search Engine Relationship Chart that you need by now), I’m starting the Friday Recap with a roundup of this week’s posts to our blog:
- On Monday, Lauren Litwinka and Merry Morud of aimClear shared their insight into social media ROI, Facebook metrics and a gold mine of other social media marketing tips. If you missed it, stop what you’re doing and read it.
- On Tuesday, I shared a new plugin by Yoast, the marketer responsible for the WordPress SEO plugin that everyone is raving about. The new plugin integrates with WordPress SEO and addresses optimization of content. It’s very cool and it’s free.
- Yesterday, our post on the value of a Facebook fan was written out of the need for me to get to the bottom of the metrics that matter to us for our Facebook marketing. I shared some great data from a report I came across and gave some perspective of my own.
Today, I walked into the office with this doll staring right at me. After the initial surprise (I’m a little creeped out by dolls), I realized this was the American Girl doll that came into conversation yesterday after Susan shared a link with me on what your American Girl doll says about you. [I wanted Samantha but my mother knew better than to spend $80 on a doll for me. As you can see by the link, this makes me awesome. --Susan]
OK, so I’m new to this whole American Girl doll phenomenon, so I’m going to take a couple minutes to explain in case you are, too. First, these dolls are slightly more expensive than the average doll and apparently have some sort of cult following — they’ve been around for 25 years.
These American Girl dolls have salons you can bring them into to get their hair done, face scrubbed, ears pierced and much, much more. Like, actual salons. People work there. And they charge you.
So then I hear that one of our staff members, a man who shall remain nameless (before the rumors start flying, it’s not Bruce), has these dolls at home as a result of his daughters growing up and leaving them behind when they moved. [[cough]GaryLuke[cough] — Susan]
I then find out that certain members of the Bruce Clay team at one point went together to one of these doll salons in Chicago with said American Girl doll to get it pampered …
And that’s how this doll ended up on my desk today.
Anyway, let’s talk some social media news, shall we? The big story this week was Facebook getting caught red-handed for hiring well-known PR firm Burson-Marstellar to smear Google. Leaked information outed Facebook and the PR firm, whose employees were pitching negative stories about Google and privacy issues. I wonder how the PR firm is planning to handle the PR on this one.
In other Facebook news, Raven Tools talked how and why to implement the Facebook comments feature on a blog. The post touches on the loss of SEO with a plugin like this. Funny because earlier this week before this post, we implemented the plugin on our blog to test it out and it seemed kinda buggy. Jon at Raven provides some good info on it though and so does the comment thread.
Mashable posted an infographic from Alterian and Sevans Strategy on the amount of people who ask others to follow them on various social mediums. The post points out that Twitter users ask for more follows than Facebook users ask for friends. My only guess is that Facebook is a lot more personal than Twitter. Your thoughts?
And many of you know by now that Search Engine Watch has a snazzy new site design. We dig.
Finally, I love me some In-N-Out, but it kinda makes me laugh how fanatic this woman is about her fast food. Actually, it makes me hungry for animal-style fries and grilled cheese. Mmmmmm.
