Who’s Manning the Store: Securing Your Google Places Page

In real estate they say that location is everything, which is true to a large extent. But the same also applies to digital space. That’s why there’s such thing as a search engine marketing industry. Location gets you seen, location can make you money, and location will make competitors desperate. In the case of Google Places, having a business catalogued as permanently closed can mean the loss of loyal customers, online traffic and revenue-much-needed-revenue in today’s economy.
Recently, fraudulent closings on Google Places have become a commonplace tactic employed by business competitors, and it turns out it’s rather easy to do. On a Google Places listing, you’ll find basic business information: name, address, hours of operation, reviews, etc. At the bottom of the listing, there is a link to “Report a problem.” From there, you can report that a business is permanently closed, which for all intents and purposes, serves as an important function. What is being discovered is that if enough people report a business as being “permanently closed”, the business is closed, in an online sense of the word.

SMX East 2011 Liveblog Schedule

While it seems like I just got back from San Francisco and SES, next week I get to jet to New York City for SMX East 2011! While at the show I’ll be curating a new episode of the SEM Synergy podcast to air on WebmasterRadio.fm Thursday at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern, featuring interviews with conference speakers. And of course, we’re thrilled to bring another conference to the pages of the BCI blog care of near-real-time liveblog coverage.
We think of liveblogging as a service for those in the industry both attending the conference and not attending it alike. For those not at the conference, liveblog coverage is a great way to stay informed of tactics, strategies and news being shared. And if you’re at the conference, liveblog coverage can serve as notes for sessions you attended or might help you decide which session you’ll attend. For instance, if you’re torn between a few sessions happening at the same time, you might rest assured that one of your picks will be available in liveblog form, freeing you up to attend another. However you use it, we’re happy to provide detailed reporting from the front lines of SMX East 2011.

Friday Recap: Labor Day Pains Edition

Anyone else looking forward to the long weekend? I, for one, am ready to soak up the last bits of summer complete with poolside drinks and good music. Is it bad that I didn’t even know the origin of Labor Day until just today? No, it’s not derived from what I thought was a systematic honoring of all the hard work we Americans do. Labor Day actually stems from a controversial event that happened back in the late 1800s involving the killing of people on strike by U.S. Marshals. Party time?
Speaking of party time, it’s been a fun-filled week here at Bruce Clay, Inc. Most notably, we were really excited at the turnout and engagement of this week’s SEM Synergy show. If you missed it, you can read all the SEM Synergy highlights and inside scoop covering topics ranging from Affiliate Summit to hacking and website backup to Google+.
