Friday Recap: Royal Pain in the Heiny Edition

I wasn’t into following the royal wedding at all. I had almost completely tuned out the coverage leading up to the ceremony that happened today. And I certainly didn’t wake up in the middle of night to watch it.

I was convinced I was immune to all the excitement. This morning, I decided to check out the Royal Channel on YouTube – just to see what Kate’s dress was like.

Big mistake.

Does Social Media Marketing Ever Sleep?

When it’s your job to be the brand ambassador or community manager for a company, is it ever OK to just tune out?

Last night, I had just started to drift off to Dreamland when I received a Facebook notification on my phone. Someone in the Bruce Clay, Inc. Facebook community asked a question.

Half asleep, I quickly tried to reason what my next move was – laying my head back on the pillow or waking up to answer the question.

Last night, the pillow won. But, not without some feelings of guilt.

The bucket list: an itemized statement of all the things you want to do before you kick the can.

Not too long ago, Bruce wandered into the writers’ department and said, “What about an SEO bucket list of things you have to do before your site dies?”

So here we are.

Now, this is not an exhaustive list by any means. If I had all the space in the world to write and you had the attention span to read it, I could think of a handful of other things to add (hint, hint: stay tuned for additions to this list in future blog posts).

For now, let’s focus on three core areas that any website should have on its SEO bucket list:

  • A strong foundation to operate on
  • SEO-friendly design and architecture
  • Quality content and structure

What’s All This About Google’s Quality Score?

Much has been written about Google’s “Quality Score” — how it’s calculated, how it works (or doesn’t work), which segments of your marketing efforts are affected by it, what are the myths, who’s happy and who’s not, what’s relevant, etc. Trying to sort through all the information can be a dizzying endeavor.

Quality score is increasingly important in Google AdWords. The Quality Score is used to assess the relevance of an ad to searchers based on ad click-through rate, engagement with the site and a measurement of the relevancy of the ad and landing page compared to the keyword associated to the search query.

So, if you’re managing your own pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns and want to improve on your ad position and Quality Score, you need to go straight to the source – Google itself, to view its current definition for Quality Score.
