100 Episodes of SEM Synergy!

SEM Synergy this week will be live, and Bruce Clay will be talking to callers and answering questions on the show! People that hang out in the WebmasterRadio.FM chat room during SEM Synergy each week (and really, why aren’t you there?) know that I’m asked “Is this live?” about once per episode. How excited am I to be able to say “YES!” this time around?!
SEM Synergy, our weekly radio show and podcast here at BCI, is actually going live for a very special reason: our 100th episode! (Pay no attention to the episode count on iTunes. It’s a little thrown off because the episode from SES San Jose 2008 was eaten alive by technical issues…)

Inside BCI’s Social Strategy for SMX — SEM Synergy Extras
Is your organization’s social media engagement at the level you’d like it to be? That was the question we asked in our Facebook Question of the Week. Some great examples came up in the conversation of how businesses are using social media, and how they’d like to advance their interaction in the future.
It’s conversations like those that we were hoping to generate when we introduced the Question of the Week to our Facebook fan page. To be honest, it doesn’t matter how many Facebook marketing webinars and conference presentations I’ve attended — I always sought a greater understanding of how Facebook can work for business.

Turning On the Lights — SEM Synergy Extras

When I found a to-die-for pizzeria hiding in plain sight across the street from my apartment building, it was bittersweet. Obviously, first-class New York style pizza in my backyard is a total win. But at the same time, I was bummed that Tony’s Pizza wasn’t showing up on the online search radar.
Just last week Paula was lamenting the loss of a printer in the area that had closed its doors. For years the company relied on word-of mouth advertising, which flourished thanks to friendly staff and competitive prices. Unfortunately, the company had some serious SEO issues — they’d claimed no local listings and had an all-Flash site. For all they were doing right in the store, the boat couldn’t stay afloat during last year’s economic storm.

Getting Cozy with Self Promotion — SEM Synergy Extras

On today’s episode of SEM Synergy, guest Lisa Barone joined us on the show. If you read the BCI blog before September of ‘08, you know The Lisa from these very pages. There’s also a chance you know her as the blogger kicking butt and chief branding officer of the marketing company she co-founded, Outspoken Media.
During what I’ll loosely call our interview (i.e. happy hour at Yolanda’s Mexican Restaurant), Lisa touches on the need for writers to overcome any lingering aversion to self promotion. Because, as she explains, promotion is the difference between awesome content and awesome content that people read. It’s a topic she tackles is greater detail on the Outspoken Media blog, where she writes:
“Content is not king. Your ability to promote that content is.”

SEM Synergy Sync Up

The last few weeks have flown by in a blur. And in the mad dash of the holidays, I’ve failed to give due love to the podcast this month. I have a sneaking suspicion that if I don’t talk about the podcast here on the blog, no one’s going to remember that exists! Why is that? You love the podcast, right?
You just haven’t been able to listen to it lately, what with the crazy time of year. I know how it goes. So to help you jump back into the podcast, here are your SEM Synergy extras for December’s episodes thus far.

A Competitive SEO Advantage in Studying the Times – SEM Synergy Extras

On today’s episode of SEM Synergy, I speak with my guest Bas van den Beld about search marketing in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
What does the Berlin Wall have to do with search marketing, you ask?
Bas is a Holland-based Internet marketing consultant, the co-host of the internationally-focused SearchCowboys podcast (live Tuesdays at 2 pm Eastern/11 am Pacific), the editor of Europe’s most popular search marketing blog, and (perhaps most intriguing of all) he was an historian in a former life.
In an article on Search Engine Land, Bas indulges his inner historian by looking at how tearing down the Berlin Wall shaped the face of global commerce and, in turn, search marketing as we know it today. What do you think the world would be like without the European Union, a single European currency and the spread of wealth that resulted within a unified Europe? A very different place indeed.
