Friday Recap: Hindsight Edition
Happy Friday, kids! Yesterday I had a vision of what it would be like to have over-40 eyesight (swear, that’s what the optometrist said). He took me on a magical trip into the future by inducing dilatation of my eyes. And boy did it suck, for a whole three hours.
I have a newfound understanding of what my parents go through when they don’t have their glasses on them. I had to fumble my way through making a phone call, hoping I was choosing the right person in my address book and not someone I didn’t want to talk to. I had to try and navigate through fuzzy street signs on my way home. And I signed more than one receipt for unconfirmed amounts of money.
Why am I telling you this? Well, I thought the lesson of this week could be appreciation. How many things in your life can you be thankful and grateful for today? Let’s all take a moment to reflect …

Everyone saw the controversy over the female tech influencer infographic? I had a chance to chat with Michael Mothner this week, the CEO of Wpromote (the company that created the infographic). He told me the women featured on the infographic actually really loved it and told them so. Whether you liked it or hated it, I’d say it was a success. It garnered national attention and was even picked up by CNN.
Susan and I were entertained this week by the Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974. It may be an oldie, but it never gets old. Some of my favorites include “Snacks on a Stick,” “Mackerelly” and the “Frankfurter Spectacular” (pictured to the left).
In more food news, plus one for Taco Bell’s use of sarcasm in its response to the lawsuit about its ground beef. Ha. [Really this whole controversy is a win for them. Never have I wanted a taco so much in my life. –Susan]
Someone hacked into The Zuck’s Facebook profile. Question: Is that the best they could do? The comments are the funny part.
I don’t for one minute blame this hawk for sneaking into the Library of Congress to get away from the freezing a** cold in D.C. The hawk was captured successfully after vacationing there — er, being stuck there for about a week. Some speculate the hawk was in the pursuit of knowledge. It was given the name Jefferson, but the author of the post wanted to name it Poindexter. C’mon … hawks can’t be Poindexter. How embarrassing. An update today from the Audubon Magazine says the hawk is doing well.
The power of volunteer search marketing on SEOmoz this week reminded us of the good we can do with our skills and experience for those organizations that don’t have the resources to hire experts. Author Keenan Steel also gives tips on how to go about nonprofit SEO. I love this. We can all make a little time to use our skills for charity, right?

In publishing news:
This led to a conversation between Susan and I, and she clued me in to the money makers in the publishing industry. Susan, please tell these folks what you told me. It’s even more mind-blowing than that tweet. [Hey kids, do you want to be a published novelist? Do you want to even have a prayer of making money from writing novels? Write romance. It’s the largest segment of publishing sales and it increased its sales when everything decreased or held steady. I’m sure your lifestyle novel is very socially important but it’s romance where the money’s at. –Susan]
Google’s Matt Cutts announced an algorithm change today that’s live and helps to eliminate sites that scrape copy from the SERPs. Can I get an “Amen”? In other Google news, SEER Interactive shared this week that Google is changing the display of the top position ads (those ads served above the search results). It seems the Meta description is tacked on to the Title tag area. SEER reports you can opt out now, but wonders how it will affect ad copy strategy. What’s your take?
