How Do I Recognize When AI-Generated Content May Be Inaccurate and Ensure That I Rely on Trustworthy Sources?

Overview

In the age of AI, the ability to spot inaccuracies in AI-generated content and verify sources is going to be critical for relying on the information you see.

What I Think

AI tools can offer a ton of convenience through their assistance in daily activities — but the reality is that they sometimes produce unreliable outputs.

Unfortunately, many people today have trouble discerning information from AI, and generally, that knowledge gap increases as you get into the older generations or those who don’t rely on technology as much. This can lead to misguided decisions.

The knowledge gap can originate from not understanding the origin of and credibility of AI-generated data.

For instance, AI systems often lack context, they always lack first-hand experience (computers don’t have life experience) and may also misinterpret data.

Informed AI users who are aware of these limitations can better safeguard their decisions when relying on AI.

In my experience, if you create a simple verification method for reviewing AI output, you can boost your ability to separate fact from fiction.

This can include reading through the sources the AI tool is referencing, and cross-referencing information against other credible sources.

Consistency in this sort of practice leads to more reliable and impactful outcomes.

Deep Dive: Discerning AI-Generated Outputs

Here are some ways you can get better at sizing up AI-generated outputs and content.

Know AI’s Limitations

It’s a good exercise for anyone using AI tools to understand AI’s limitations.

In general, AI models work based on their training data. But the training data may include outdated or biased information, which is important to note.

Identify AI Shortcomings

When we’re talking about AI-generated content, for example, it often lacks the nuanced judgment of humans.

Knowing this, you can take a few extra steps such as checking for vagueness, flagging unsupported claims or looking for contradictions.

Some tools designed for content verification can help streamline this process (like certain AI detectors). But remember that AI detectors can be inaccurate as well when it comes to certain things.

Fact-Check the Data

Always do a quick fact-check of the AI output, including verifying the data against a few other sources.

For example, if the AI tool cites a statistic, review the source it came from to make sure it’s accurate, and then cross-reference the source or data by trying to track down the original source (if it’s not already).

Report Inconsistencies

It may be tempting to just get frustrated with the AI tool and walk away. But try not to sit idly by.

Reporting AI inaccuracies to developers may encourage the refinement of the tool and improve future outputs for everyone.

Get AI Training

Consider taking some classes on AI literacy or task completion. These types of programs could equip you with extra skills to critically evaluate and to effectively use AI.

And then staying on top of any changes and advancements in AI technology or the tool you’re using helps you use the tools more effectively.

10-Step Action Plan for Verifying AI-Generated Information

Here are 10 ways to verify the accuracy of AI-generated content:

  1. Identify the AI-generated content that needs verification, and check if the content includes references or citations.
  2. Cross-reference these citations with credible sources like academic journals or databases.
  3. Flag what may seem like unsupported claims, and use fact-checking to confirm by looking at independent and reliable sources.
  4. Consult industry experts to validate complex or technical information.
  5. Use AI detection tools as needed while understanding that not all are accurate.
  6. Understand how AI generates outputs to better understand its limitations.
  7. Report inaccuracies to the AI content developers for correction.
  8. Get training to improve AI literacy.
  9. Regularly update your verification processes as AI tools evolve.
  10. Learn from discussions on AI ethics and accountability.
