Google Caffeine vs. Google Mayday – SEM Synergy Extras

Google rainbow prism

Today on SEM Synergy (Yeah, you totally missed the chat party, but you’re always invited. You’ll be there next week?), SEO Bradley Leese shared research on two major Google updates that lit up the SEO space: Caffeine (the infrastructure update) and Mayday (the algorithm update).

The tricky thing about Caffeine and Mayday is that they’re both distinct and connected, having appeared at much the same time, either by coincidence, cover-up or necessity. By that I mean, right around the beginning of May, as the infrastructure update had SEOs on heightened alert despite assurances from the search engine that Caffeine wasn’t going to have any significant effect on rankings, suddenly there was admission of an algo update.

What’s the likelihood that those events occurred at the same time by sheer luck? Or, did Google employ slight of hand and misdirection by releasing a direct ranking change right in the middle of testing and analysis of Caffeine’s effects? Then there’s the third option. Could it be that Mayday required Caffeine or Caffeine needed Mayday in order to live up to its full potential? As Double Rainbow Man would say, “What does it mean?!”

It’s Getting Personal: Making the Most of Relaxing Privacy Expectations

Always discovering and testing tools of the trade, last week a colleague pointed me toward Gist. Gist aggregates a user’s contacts and connections across their multiple social networks, e-mail accounts and calendars. It requires that you submit your account login credentials and to approve the service to access to your accounts. It’s a run-of-the-mill request familiar to anyone who’s ever used a third-party application with their Facebook or Twitter account.

So why am I so freaked out?
The Privacy Ice Age

In March 2008 I made my debut on the Bruce Clay blog with an optimistic vision of targeted advertising. I liked ads and content delivered just for me with a personal flair. My only concern was with my info getting into Big Brother’s hands.

But as commenters were quick to point out, user’s personal data is used by advertisers more than by the government. And in the two years since my trusting embrace of personalized ad practices, I’ve witnessed a suspiciously dismissive Eric Schmidt claim there’s no need for privacy if you’ve got nothing to hide and a power-drunk Facebook decide its privacy terms were an outdated inconvenience.

On Tech, Women and You’re Not Helping

Work is complicated

This is one of those posts that I’m afraid I’m not rational enough to write. Whenever I try, it degenerates into incoherent screaming and CAPSLOCKED RAGE and no one wants to read that. But because the alternative is ranting on Twitter to no effect again, I’ll give it a shot. Another quick warning, it’s not about SEO or even Internet marketing. It’s about respect.

BlueGlass Conference to Debut in LA, Rock the Industry

BlueGlass LA

You may have heard that the search engine marketing industry underwent a tectonic shift recently. Search Engine Journal, Search & Social, 10e20 and Brent Csutoras, Inc. merged to form a power house agency, publisher, and now, Internet marketing conference.

The first BlueGlass conference takes place in Los Angeles on July 19 and 20, and if you plan to attend, use the code bcbgla to receive a 15% discount on registration. Susan and I will be there, with plans to liveblog and capture interviews for our podcast while we soak up the knowledge and networking.

And you’ll want to be there, too. The conference promises dynamic and action-oriented conversations about Internet marketing in an intimate setting at a reasonable price. To find out more about just how BlueGlass can deliver on its lofty goals, I spoke to organizer Tony Adam about what we can expect.

Looking Into the Future: Mobile Marketing — SEM Synergy Extras

woman with crystal ball

It’s the year of mobile! It’s the year of mobile! Well it looks like we’ve finally stopped crying wolf. Mobile Internet use and interaction is on the rise in a big way. Here are some reports, studies and generally fascinating stuff on the platform marketers have been drooling over for years.

Assorted Musings on Mobile Ad Platforms and Devices: Take a listen to today’s episode of SEM Synergy. Some of the highlights include Bruce’s thoughts on the launch of Apple’s iAd platform and whether it might possibly live up to Steve Jobs expectations to conquer half of the mobile ad market by the end of the year.

Bruce also turns a critical eye on a study on mobile audiences by JiWire that reports 52 percent of smartphone users say they’ve acted on an advertisement in a mobile app and 18 percent say they’ve made a purchase from a mobile app in the last month. Mobile tech specialist Michael Martin also joins the program to offer insight on mobile advertising, location services and popularity of smartphone devices.

Facebook News Round-Up

Creating a custom Facebook Page with FBML

Welcome back from the long holiday weekend! Though seriously, this industry doesn’t slow down for a minute, does it? Seems everyone used their day off to get ahead on their blog writing or reading. (I’ll admit, I was guilty, too, with my guest post on Outspoken Media about green business practices that better your bottom line. Check it out if you get a chance, but don’t leave yet! I’m talking here! ;) )

While America was busy with its Independence Day festivities this weekend, for the rest of the world it’s been all about the World Cup. Tomorrow Germany and Spain will fight it out for the last spot in the finals facing the Netherlands. One team that didn’t fair so well during the tournament was Nigeria. The team was eliminated during the group stage — which would have been downer enough for Nigerian nationals — but worse yet, the country’s president issued a two-year suspension to the national soccer team from international competition due to its poor showing. Not about to accept insult with injury, fans of the team rallied together to convince the president to reverse his ruling, where else but on Facebook.
