When is Hype Too Much?

Apple debuted a touchscreen tablet computer yesterday, following months of building fervor and anticipation. By the time Steve Jobs took the stage at the iPad event, the rumor mill had hit a frenzied pitch and it was almost impossible to travel the Web without stumbling over counterfeits and alleged leaks.

Now, Apple’s hype machine is like a well-oiled Rube Goldberg. Steve Jobs is notorious for demanding secrecy and retaining a tight-gripped control of the company’s media presence. Announcements, timing and even “leaks” all fit into a finely engineered plan to excite consumers and the media — and in the last few years each announcement and event has been more exciting and more anticipated than the next.

So, it’s worth taking a look at Apple’s media strategy around the iPad in the last month to see if there are any lessons for marketers to take away.

Archive Dive with SEO Experts – SEM Synergy Extras

SEM Synergy logo

In the year and a half that Bruce Clay, Inc. has been doing a weekly radio show/podcast with WebmasterRadio.fm, we’ve been lucky enough to have the most incredible guests. And while I try to feature our expert interviewees on the blog as part of SEM Synergy Extras, there’s usually no substitute for hearing from the authorities themselves.

Unfortunately for listeners, at the moment SEMSynergy.com is in need of a little TLC because the only way to sort and view past episodes is by date — not super helpful if you’re looking for a particular guest or topic.

While we undertake some modifications for the site, I thought I’d do a little organizing for your podcast listening enjoyment. Here are some of our interviews from the last six months, categorized by topic. My hope is that this will allow ya’ll to dive right in to our stellar archive of episodes. So sit back and scan this list to find your favorite personalities or topics.

A Scary Fairytale: Newsday’s Pay Wall Affair

goldilocks fairytale

To the tune of the Fresh Prince theme song:

Now this is a story all about how
Newsday’s life got flipped, turned upside down.
And I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there,
And I promise to stop singing Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

…Although, the prince may fit right in here since this is a fairytale. And like every good fairytale, there’s a moral to this story.

SEO Weekend Update: SEMMY Awards, Caffeine on Scene, and Yahoo! Ads Made Easier

data center

It’s Monday and my feed reader and e-mail inbox are overflowing. (I bet this sounds familiar!) It was enough for me to reinstitute a feature on the Bruce Clay, Inc. blog from before my time: the SEO Weekend Update. Here’s the search news from over the weekend and today.

Enhanced Rich Snippets and Highlighted Answers in Google Results

Google has announced two enhancements to search results through Rich Snippets and Google Squared technologies. The first is a new Rich Snippets format for events, allowing webmasters to identify pages with events through a standard, engine-friendly format. The second uses structured data to deliver “answer highlighting,” seen in search results as boldface text that answers a user’s query.

Friday Recap: Storm Chaser Edition

It’s been a week deserving of a shout-it-from-the-rooftops “TGIF!” So much going on, makes a girl just wanna curl up with a bucket of Rocky Road, watching the lightning storm out my window.

Alternately, I could kick back and watch the Sundance Film Festival online. YouTube announced it is getting into the movie biz starting this week. YouTube will start renting movies, launching the offering by making five Sundance Film Festival films available for rent this weekend.

Have you heard that it’s raining in SoCal? A series of monster storms pummeled the Cali southland this week.

Think You’re an SEO Expert? Google Tests Your SEO Smarts

question in Google Webmaster Quiz

“Let’s play a game!” said Google to SEOs and webmasters this week.

Google has challenged webmasters to test their Google Fu with a fun and educational quiz (like the “Are you a good kisser?” quiz in that woman’s magazine that you couldn’t resist taking as a teen — but I digress …)
