February 26, 2010Friday Recap: Dance Like You Mean It Edition

So I’m getting pretty anxious. I don’t know if it’s the caffeine IV drip from this morning or the tornado brain I get before leaving town for a monster search relay like SMX West, but things are getting all Fri-dazed up in here.
I mean, is it true that I might really hear Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer address a house packed with search marketers? As Marty Weintraub of aimClear wonders, could the occasion of Ballmer keynoting a search conference usher in a new SEO era? How refreshing to think that Microhoo may support the SEO industry!

BCI’s Christopher Hart Speaking at Ultra Light Startups Next Week

Next week members of the Bruce Clay, Inc. crew will be taking a trip to Northern California to attend SMX West. However, the booths and the bars around Santa Clara won’t be the only place BCI will be rep’d next week.
Every month in New York City, a group of entrepreneurs and SEOs come together to hear about the innovative and dynamic ways that Web sites can be improved. Similar events happen in Boston, Denver, Philly and London, too, under the stewardship of Graham Lawlor and his company Ultra Light Startups.
On March 4, Bruce Clay, Inc.’s director, Eastern region operations, Christopher Hart will be at ULS’s SEO for New Websites forum, happy to answer anyone’s questions on SEO for new sites, old sites and everything in between.

Inside BCI’s Social Strategy for SMX — SEM Synergy Extras
Is your organization’s social media engagement at the level you’d like it to be? That was the question we asked in our Facebook Question of the Week. Some great examples came up in the conversation of how businesses are using social media, and how they’d like to advance their interaction in the future.
It’s conversations like those that we were hoping to generate when we introduced the Question of the Week to our Facebook fan page. To be honest, it doesn’t matter how many Facebook marketing webinars and conference presentations I’ve attended — I always sought a greater understanding of how Facebook can work for business.

Is personal search about semantics?

I was recently reading an interview with a director of Bing, Stefan Weitz about the future of search. Stefan has said that one of the biggest problems that search engines have is trying to ascertain the intent of the searcher. This problem has been around for ages and the example we use at Bruce Clay [...]

Reading Up on Social Media Marketing’s Next Chapter

Some days it feels like the universe is trying to tell you something. Today that something was that social media marketing (SMM) is the future, and yet, it is not what professional marketers might traditionally expect. Here are four lessons I learned today that advanced my understanding of SMM on the Web today:
- The recession of the public relations industry is lifting — as long as you’re making use of social media.
- If your organization is not active in social media marketing, you’re missing major opportunities.
- Social media marketing shouldn’t be treated like a separate marketing silo — it should be interwoven throughout an organization.
- The bar has been raised since social media was first used for marketing. Organizations need to graduate to a mature model of social media to truly take advantage of it.
If any of the above points whet your appetite, grab a fork and let’s dig in!

Friday Recap: The Week in a Jiff Edition

It’s been a crazy week. I moved desks and now I have a great view out the window. We had a BBQ feast for lunch today. And Christopher and Shannon have been in town, hanging out at SEOToolSet training. Don’t you just love family reunions?
We’ve made it to Friday and it’s time to let off a little steam. So you know the drill on Fridays: news of the (search) world and news of the weird. Away we go!
I tweeted about this on Monday (hat tip Susan) and a few peeps liked it so I’m compelled to use it as my opener. I present to you CRABZILLA! I’m told on good authority that Mega Shark is Crabzilla’s only plausible nemesis. I wouldn’t want to take part in that battle. Well, until it’s over, at which point I’ll be there with my fork, butter and maybe a slice of lemon for garnish self-defense.

Take a Ride on the Yahoo! News Cruise

Hehe! Hehehe! …Ahem. Hi. Sorry. Excuse the giggling. I’m just so amused by the repeating vowel sound of “Yahoo! News Cruise” in the title up there.
Holey cheese, I’m such an English nerd. [Like swiss? --Susan] (Yup! It is National Drink Wine Day, after all. Gotta make sure your curd is fully stocked!)
Anyway! Yahoo!’s had a fist-full of announcements in the last few days and I wanted to seize on the occasion to give #2 a little face-time.

The State of the Australian Search Market

Australia has always had a healthy obsession for a few things that make this country great. Things like your favourite sports team, a great day at the beach and a backyard BBQ, are topics that can consume a large amount of time and conversation. There is one oddity that continues to boggle my mind, which [...]

Turning On the Lights — SEM Synergy Extras

When I found a to-die-for pizzeria hiding in plain sight across the street from my apartment building, it was bittersweet. Obviously, first-class New York style pizza in my backyard is a total win. But at the same time, I was bummed that Tony’s Pizza wasn’t showing up on the online search radar.
Just last week Paula was lamenting the loss of a printer in the area that had closed its doors. For years the company relied on word-of mouth advertising, which flourished thanks to friendly staff and competitive prices. Unfortunately, the company had some serious SEO issues — they’d claimed no local listings and had an all-Flash site. For all they were doing right in the store, the boat couldn’t stay afloat during last year’s economic storm.
